Visual Arts Field Trip To James Hubbell and the Ilan-Lael Foundation
From Johnny King, Visual Arts Teacher:
Jillian Bourdon and I took a group of students to visit James Hubbell and the Ilan-Lael Foundation, located in Santa Ysabel near Julian, on Mastery Learning Day on May 28. There we met Emilie, the current artist-in-residence, who gave us a tour of the property. We saw so many different types of architecture and art from over the years, beginning in the 1960's and on to current buildings and art being created today. The unique structures and artwork we saw included handcrafted doors, drawings, watercolors, sculptures, stained glass windows, blown glass, brick work, mosaics, houses, fantastical interior structures and bathrooms, a pool, and studio work spaces, among many other things. We learned about the artist James Hubbell's strong connection with nature and witnessed his artistic vision of merging architecture and with natural elements in a beautiful and harmonious way. The students also learned some basics of mosaic tiling and cement work, and even had a chance to cut glass in the studio.
Our nation doubled the number of homeschooling students just in the past year. The tenets of homeschooling have always been a source of inspiration to The Grauer School.
Congratulations to all of The Grauer School's 12th Grade "Class of 2021" graduates! The graduates received their diplomas in ceremonies on campus on Friday, June 11, cheered on by their family and friends.

Ready for summer? This column is Dr Grauer’s “key note” to our graduating middle school students and it is guaranteed to launch you into a summer of joy and play!
The Grauer Faculty will be reading "Permission To Feel" this summer, and Dr. Grauer encourages you to read it with us. The book helps us to identify our emotions, understand the impact of those emotions on all aspects of our lives, and develop skills for using our emotions in healthy and productive ways.
Dr. Grauer shares a final tribute to Jeff Salz, anthropologist, father, adventurer, orator, teacher, and inspiration for many of The Grauer School's values and traditions. Whenever you were with him, it was just a given that this is a laughing universe we all live in.
