UNESCO International Day of Tolerance 2022 at The Grauer School
The Grauer School observed the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) International Day of Tolerance on Tuesday, February 15. We believe that it is important, now more than ever, to continue the conversation of tolerance with our students. Special thanks to all of the teachers, staff members, and students who led sessions, and to Shelley Boniwell for coordinating these special workshops for our Grauer students.
This year's Tolerance Day sessions included an impressive list of thought-provoking topics centered around the theme of Inclusion, including: LGBTQA Representation in Comic Books, The Criminal Justice System and People of Color, Lessons on Inclusion from Stoic Philosophy, From the Sidelines to the Field: The Impact of Title IX on Women's Sports, Reproductive Health Inequities, Understanding the Challenges Immigrants Face, Disabled vs. Differently Abled, Women in the Workplace, Why Pronouns Matter and Other LGBTQ Issues, Tolerance for the Planet, Normalizing and Understanding Periods, and What Does It Mean to be Inclusive?
Some feedback from the students after their workshops:
- "Focusing on yourself and the way you do things can be more powerful than worrying about others faults"
- "Being an immigrant is one of the most lonely things in the world"
- "Women should have the ability to protect themselves"
- "Just because someone has a disability does not mean they are less human"
- "I will continue to advocate for myself and be brave"
- "I will further educate myself on the criminal justice system, and how it works, and I will look into ways I can help children who have a parent that is incarcerated"
- "I will be more aware of my unconscious biases"
- "Listen to others and what they have to say about their story"
- "Try and see people's strengths not their weaknesses"
