2025 Spring Expeditions at The Grauer School
From Dana Abplanalp-Diggs, Head of School:
We strongly believe that The Grauer School is among the best in the world at balancing college preparation with Expeditionary Learning. The school was founded on the idea of giving students opportunities to “Learn by Discovery®” and provides students with the worldwide experience to become compassionate, service-minded citizens. As a UNESCO Affiliate School, we are widely lauded for our humanitarian and ecological service in places of need. Expeditionary learning is not just one of our six Core Features, it’s something we believe in so strongly that we cancel classes two weeks each year in order to engage our students in humanitarian and ecological service.
Our dynamic line-up of 2025 Spring Expeditions during the week of March 24-28, 2025, included:
- First Aid Rescue Adventure (Middle School)
- Poland Unveiled Expedition
- Costa Rica Environmental Sustainability & Service Expedition
- Mammoth Lakes Expedition
- "Back To Our Roots" Expedition
- San Diego Day Trips: San Diego Nature & Arts
Our Expeditions program is not only a great way for our students to “Learn by Discovery®,” but also to foster new relationships, practice resourcefulness, and to challenge themselves beyond their comfort levels. It is really quite miraculous that we are able to organize and plan six such incredibly diverse trips that can accommodate all of our students. We are grateful to Patricia Young, our Expeditions Program Director, and to all of our Expedition Trip Leads and chaperones for all of the time, energy, and love they have put into these incredible trips. We hope that our students brought home beautiful memories that they’ll still think of fondly when they are thirty.

This week, Dr. Grauer celebrates National Banjo Day, honoring the joy of the old-time tradition of making music by hand, and keeping this heritage alive. To study our heritage is fundamental to what educators and schools are charged with doing with a rising generation.
Grauer's High School Theatre Arts Department presented Pride and Prejudice. Congratulations to all of our cast members and hardworking crew members on a fabulous show!
What happens when school leaders feel they can’t speak their passionate beliefs freely—even while teaching banned books? In an age of political tension and self-censorship, this piece explores the quiet dilemmas facing educators.
One of the highlights of the Poland Unveiled expedition was our unforgettable visits to monuments remembering the atrocities of the Holocaust and the resilience of the Polish people, which brought to life our World History curriculum on World War II. Our visits to each of these places were emotional, meaningful, and deeply important for our students.

At The Grauer School, and any great school, dance and exercise isn’t just art—it’s a powerful form of learning even if it often stays in the shadows. Learn not just how dance is transforming students’ minds, bodies, and spirits—but why joy might be the most radical lesson of all.
