Revolutionary War "Capture The Flag" Game in US History Class

Revolutionary War "Capture The Flag" Game in US History Class

From Paloma Connolly, U.S. History Teacher:

The 8th graders played a game of Revolutionary War "Capture the Flag" in U.S. History class on the basketball court, with volleyballs standing in for flags. Each round of the game was analogous to the course of the war to help explain how the Continental army was able to defeat the British. To tilt the game in favor of the colonists, new rules were frequently introduced including: the “colonist” team not having to capture a flag to win but rather only defend their flag, as George Washington realized he only needed to defend the colonies to win the war rather than fully defeat the British army. The “British” team had to capture more and more flags as the game went on to represent how difficult they realized it was going to be to win the war. And finally an influx of additional students to the “colonist” team represented France joining the war in support of the colonists. At first it seemed destined that our “British” team would win, but through the course of the events and rule changes, we saw how it was possible for the Continental army to win.
