High School Buddy Program: End-of-Year Celebration

High School Buddy Program: End-of-Year Celebration

From Shelley Joslin, Mentoring Program Advisor:

At the beginning of the school year, 11th and 12th Grade students can volunteer to be mentors to a Middle School student. The High School students who wanted to be mentors were matched with Middle School students early in the school year. Last week, we celebrated the end of a very successful mentoring year with a pizza party!

This program provides opportunities for peer role modeling from the older students, and friendship and advice for the younger students. The mentors are required to meet twice a month for 30 minutes with their Middle School student mentee, although many of them meet more often. This year, there were 29 mentor/mentee pairs, and students typically met at lunch or after school to discuss topics of interest, talk about life as a Middle School or High School student, play sports or board games, and enjoy each other's company.
