Grauer student and teacher present at University of San Diego

Alicia Tembi, U.S. History Teacher and Professional Development Coordinator,  and Grauer senior Rhian B. '19 were invited to present on Saturday, December 1, at a seminar hosted at University of San Diego's School of Leadership and Education as a part of their Character Development Program. The seminar, "Celebrating Student Voice Through Project Based Learning," focused on the ingredients that are key to creating a successful project through a case study.

The case study was the Voices of Social Justice project that 11th graders at Grauer participate in where a voice from the Civil Rights Era that has been misunderstood or forgotten is illuminated through an artistic medium. Rhian performed the original song, “A War That Can’t be Won (When I Speak),” which she wrote for the project last spring. The song honors Juliette Hampton Morgan, a young white woman from the south that stood up for African American rights during the era. Morgan was shunned by her community and harassed for supporting equal rights, which triggered depression and later suicide. The goal of the seminar was to support teachers around San Diego County in developing engaging, student-centered projects that develop strong character and help students find joy in learning. Alicia and Rhian will be repeating their presentation at several upcoming seminars and events in the San Diego area through the school year.
