Grauer Physics Students Create Lightsabers
From Morgan Brown, Physics Teacher: Physics students have been studying electricity and circuits. Their unit project was to put their knowledge into practical use by building a circuit for a lightsaber, similar to the lightsabers used in the Star Wars movies. Students learned about the components used, including voltage sources, resistors, light emitting diodes, switches, and heat sinks. They also learned how to solder all the components together, which proved to be quite challenging to get the right amount of solder to make the connection strong enough to work. The students also revisited their 3D modeling skills in designing and 3D printing custom lightsaber hilts. Students had fun creating a variety of designs and styles, some serious, some hilarious including a hotdog on a bun!
