Grauer Middle School Robotics Team Wins "Core Values" Award
From Peggy Gardner, Middle School Robotics Coach:
Congratulations to Grauer's Middle School Robotics team, the Grauer Gorillegos, for competing in their first FLL (First Lego League) Robotics tournament of the season at San Dieguito Academy on Saturday, November 3. The Middle School Robotics team members are:
- 8th Grade: Gabriel C., Adrien C., Ethan D., John Joseph H., Michael L.
- 7th Grade: Eli D., Nicholas H., Symphonie L.
The team started off the day with 3 rounds of judging, where they had to stand in front of the judges and talk about 3 topics: their Robot design and programming; their Project presentation that proposed a solution to create Astro-Gummies made of nutritious ingredients for astronauts to eat while in their spacesuits; and how their team used the Core Values of FLL in their meetings and on a daily basis. Then, they competed in a Practice Round and 3 rounds of actual competition, where they ran the robot through missions on the competition field.
At the end of the day, there was an Awards Ceremony, and the team was incredibly excited to win the 2nd Place "Core Values" award which meant they were one of only 5 teams out of 19 teams at the competition that were advancing to the next level of competition. This award is especially meaningful because it demonstrates that Grauer's team embodies the core values of an FLL team, including Gracious Professionalism, Coopertition, teamwork, inclusion, having the students do all the work themselves, learning about robotics and programming, sharing with their community, and having lots of fun.
Our team would like to thank mentors Morgan Brown and Joshua B. '22; parent mentor Paula Hamma; all of our team parents for their support; and Patricia Young and Nick Scacco for allowing the team to give their Project presentation in their Science classes last week.
The Middle School Robotics team will be competing next in the SoCal Championship at Legoland on Saturday, December 8!
