Girl Rising Club Hosts Girlie Garage Workshop With Television Coverage
On May 2, Girl Rising Club students participated in a 2-hour workshop with Talena Handley, owner of Girlie Garage, an automotive consulting company. Our students got under the hood of two different cars to learn basic automotive safety and maintenance, as well as how to navigate working with a mechanic and handling any potential emergency situations. The students practiced changing a tire, checking oil, and changing an air filter with Talena's guidance, all with the goal of empowering our students around a traditionally-male activity. Like many of the initiatives here at Grauer, this collaboration with Girlie Garage was student-driven and aligned well with our school's mission, core values and emphasis on project-based learning.
Reporter Abbie Black, a television reporter from CBS Channel 8, came to campus to cover the Girlie Garage workshop activity. She interviewed Principal Alicia Tembi, Talena Handley, and Esme M. '27 for the television coverage. You can click here to read the news story and view the video on the CBS Channel 8 website.

We are so impressed by their embodiment of our core values, their talent, their gratitude, and their ability to articulate what legacy they are leaving The Grauer School.
The Grauer School's teachers presented Academic and Core Values Awards at our schoolwide assembly on May 13. The departments that presented awards included Social Studies, Math, English, Science, World Languages, Physical Education, and Community Service.
Last week, Dr. Grauer introduced the rise of super-efficient, AI-driven SAT prep tools. This week, he is taking that idea much further—into the realm of character, empathy, and purpose. If we can gamify test prep for optimal motivation, why not human growth and spirit?
