Environmental Science & Photography Classes: Anza Borrego Field Trip
From Nick Scacco, Environmental Science Teacher:
The Environmental Science class has a strong focus on outdoor education, and we spend a lot of time outdoors enjoying our local ecosystems. On Friday, April 5, we took a class trip to the Anza Borrego desert to catch the unique flowers that bloom spectacularly during our region's intermittent rainy seasons. We partnered with Johnny King's Photography class to capture our field trip.
We had several special experiences during our day. First, we encountered thousands of painted lady butterflies on our way driving out of the mountains to the desert. Our first stop was in Borrego Springs at the giant sculpture park with 130 steel sculptures created by Ricardo Breceda, and we saw hundreds of caterpillars there. Many of the wildflower fields had passed their peak bloom, but the ocotillio were incredible. Our last stop was on a hike viewing succulents on our way out of the desert. We ended the day in Julian, sharing pie and cider on a foggy and cold day.
