7th Grade Biology: Smartphone Microscopes

7th Grade Biology: Smartphone Microscopes
From Nick Scacco, Science Teacher:

We started off the 7th Grade Life Science class with a little wisdom this year, by discussing the quote "measure twice and cut once." We put our discussion into practice by building stands to transform our smartphones into microscopes, using wood and lucite pieces and a small lens to create a platform for a cell phone. Students needed to measure and mark out their pieces of wood and plexiglass, and then they cut and drilled carefully so that their finished product came out like they intended. With their new microscope platforms that they constructed, the students used their smartphones this week as an inexpensive digital microscope to view natural items they found around the campus, including flowers, leaves, spiders, bees, and bugs.

In our discussion about creating the smartphone microscope devices, we talked about how you can work carefully and trust yourself even when you're doing something new. Students learned to work safely by learning proper techniques for drills and working together in teams. The trust and teamwork that we cultivated during our first week will be our foundation for the rest of the year.
