2026 Lunar New Year Assembly
From Paul-Michael Ogburn, Global Insights Teacher:
On February 24, The Grauer School had a special assembly to celebrate the Lunar New Year and welcome the Year of the Fire Horse. The event began with an introduction about the Lunar New Year by emcee and event organizer Paul-Michael Ogburn. Grauer students Yona S. '29 and Sophie Z. '29 performed the song "Bai Suzhen Under the Qingcheng Mountain" on traditional Chinese instruments. Mimi Robinson presented an introduction to Lion dancing, and then the White Dragon's Lion Dance troupe performed an exciting Lion Dance followed by a variety of Kung Fu forms.
At the conclusion of the assembly, all of the students learned more about Asian culture and the traditions of Lunar New Year at booths led by 7th Grade Global Insights students. The 7th Grade students gave lessons, answered questions, shared food and candy, and led creative activities. The booths covered a variety of different aspects of Lunar New Year including Dumplings, Sweet Rice Balls (Tangyuan), Longevity Noodles, Soy products, Chinese Zodiac Animals, Lucky & Unlucky numbers, Chinese Character Writing, Lion Dance, Lunar New Year Candy, Lucky Fruits, the game of Go, Chopsticks, Firecrackers, Red Envelopes, and Plum Blossoms.
This annual assembly is always an entertaining opportunity for Grauer students to learn more about Asian cultures and honor the diversity that our international students and faculty bring to our school community. Thanks to everyone for an amazing Lunar New Year assembly and for visiting our 7th Grade booths. The 7th Grade students are all super proud of mastering their topic and sharing their expert knowledge with their teachers and peers. Special shout-out to the 7th Graders for all of their hard work to make this assembly so fun and informative!

When a school is destroyed, the world debates war. Teachers see something else: the subtle but real classroom work of building peace. What is the responsibility of schools and teachers in times like this?
The Music Department presented our 7th annual Battle of the Bands semi-final and final competitions. Congratulations to the winning band, and to all of the other bands who competed!
The Grauer School had two High School teams competing at the San Diego Science Olympiad (SDSO) competition at the University of San Diego on February 28. It’s a huge accomplishment for students to place in the top 30 of any events, so it was very exciting that many of our students on both teams were able to accomplish that.
Are schools raising Captains… while quietly losing the Poets? A new idea helped me name something many educators, parents, and students have long felt but rarely articulate: The Captain and the Poet. It is a new idea that is ancient.
Congratulations to Jonah L. '26 for celebrating his Senior Night for the Horizon Prep/Grauer Boys Basketball team on February 12. We appreciate Jonah's hard work and commitment to the team, and we were grateful to help him celebrate with his family and friends during Senior Night.
As a culminating activity after reading "Frankenstein", 12th Grade English students participated in a mock trial where Victor Frankenstein was tried for 'Child Abandonment' and 'Accessory to Murder'.
