2024 Grauer 9th Grade Matriculation Ceremony
Congratulations to our 9th Grade students on their Matriculation into High School! The Matriculation Ceremony marks students' official commencement to The Grauer High School community. Matriculation is an esteemed, traditional ceremony. In the formal English traditions at the universities in Oxford and Cambridge, the term is used for the ceremony at which new students are entered into the register of the university, at which point they become members of the university. The Grauer School matriculation is less formal, but meaningful to who we are as a community. The students receive sweatshirts with their graduation year not just to symbolize their enhanced connectivity to the school's community, but to mark our confidence in their journey to adulthood.
Grauer 9th Grade students were matriculated in a special ceremony on October 22. The ceremony began with a procession of the 9th Grade students into Meyer Hall, led by Middle School Dean Erin Langen through a threshold of percussion created by Clayton Payne, Raina N. '26, and Esme M. '27 on the drums, symbolic of all the "noise" in life that might distract them from their true purpose. Senior Teacher Clayton Payne hosted the event. 9th Grade student musicians Madeleine H. '28 and Charlotte R. '28 sang the song "Time of Your Life", accompanied by Ty M. '26 and Music Teacher Isaac Langen. Head of School Emeritus Stuart Grauer gave a speech about rites of passage and the adventures that the matriculates will have over the next 4 years. The event continued with the reading of "Roster of Matriculates" by Principal Alicia Tembi. As each name was read, students cast a piece of dissolving rice paper into a bowl of water, on which was a note about something they were either going to cast away or steer towards in this next phase of life. Then, they shook hands with Head of School Dana Abplanalp-Diggs and received their special "Grauer Class of 2028" sweatshirt as their matriculation gift.

Dr. Grauer, along with The Grauer School’s research office, has spent 14 years developing the Small Schools Coalition which documents why and how smaller schools are not less by virtue of their enrollment size, but so much more. Here is an enjoyable story about that.
What happens when we stop trusting experts—especially in our schools? Dr. Grauer explores the rise of anti-expert thinking, the decline of formal education, and why real teachers still matter.
What if the future of education isn’t in scaling up, but in staying human? At a small schools conference in D.C., Stuart Grauer reflects on leadership, trust, burnout, and what it means to write a new script—one student and one story at a time. We can do this.
The Grauer Visual & Performing Arts Department presented the 21st annual Grauerpalooza celebration of the Arts, featuring performances from our Middle School and High School music programs, Visual Arts and Multimedia displays, student booths, and more. It was a fantastic event!
As a culminating project for their Civil Rights Movement unit, 11th graders completed "Voices of Social Justice" presentations. Each student investigated a "voice" from the Civil Rights era that was forgotten, misunderstood or suppressed, and then crafted a piece of art that embodied that individual's story.
