It's the back end of a productive semester learning by discovery at The Grauer School, and the front end of another beautiful holiday season: time to spend with those close to us, time to spread appreciation and optimism and humor, time to listen better than ever, and to stay warm and open. The world is our hearth.

Some of us are wondering: what can we talk about with all those neighbors and relatives around, and how can we not bore the daylights out of our own children so that they won't retreat to their rooms and headphones? How can we mercifully spare students who are seniors from the 10 millionth question about where they are applying to college? Lucky for you, I have the answer! Nothing, absolutely nothing, beats talking about the crazy stuff that happened when we were young. Nothing beats that story about crazy uncle Rico and his high school exploits behind the bleachers, or the time Gramma tried pot and left the snake's cage open.
And now, my friend KJ Dell'Antonia, bestselling author of the book "How to be a Happier Parent: Raising a Family, Having a Life, and Loving (Almost) Every Minute", has written us this letter and column all about bracing our teens for the holidays, which I am so happy to share:

Bracing Our Teens (and Ourselves) for the Holidays

With Thanksgiving coming, and the winter holidays zipping up close behind, many families are planning visits or travels with extended family. Those trips are a wonderful time to reconnect—but they can also be fraught. With that in mind, Dr. Grauer asked me to share some tips for managing experiences and expectations for kids and parents alike.
Know why you're going Not everything about a family holiday trip might be precisely a dream vacation for parents or teens, but if we hold our reason for going close to the heart (and keep it on mental replay as well), we can diffuse our reaction to many tension-inducing moments before it begins. We're there to spend time with family and deepen our connections, not to change Uncle Hugh's political views or convince Great-Aunt Bernice not to buy everyone gender-specific plastic junk.
Remember that you have a choice (of sorts) Here's a thought exercise: You really do have a choice. You could stay home, or go somewhere else. That choice might make everyone around you unhappy but it's still a choice. Our kids have a choice too—we don't want them to make it, but they could flat out refuse to get on the flight or out of the car.
We all have a choice. We feel like we don't, because people are depending on us—but we do. So we're choosing to do some things that we might not "want" to do because of those people. When we look at it that way, it can be easier to sit through a little discomfort, a little boredom, the fourth distant family member asking what your favorite class is. You made a choice to be the person you want to be, and that means being right here.

All in, and all out Just as you have a choice, you should also have an out. Planning a few escapes during a family visit (even if it's just nominating yourself to go get lattes for everyone) can give you a little breathing room and make you more able to be "all in" the rest of the time. For teens, ask them to pick some "all in" time as well. Wouldn't you trade an hour of your 14-year-old hooked up to her headphones for her having a solid half-hour-long conversation with your mother? A polite and engaged dinner for an evening locked in the guest room with a book? Better to plan for these things with your teens or your partner ahead of time than to argue about them huddled in the laundry room, knowing that your brother-in-law is in the living room making book on who will win.
Accept that not everyone is on the same page It would be lovely if every guest at the holiday table had come in with no baggage and a firm intention to make the day as pleasant as possible for everyone. That probably won't be the case. Reminding yourself (and sometimes reassuring your kids) that everybody packs their issues up in their suitcases and totes them along can help us manage unpleasantness.
Start a conversation Holiday gatherings are better if we're not all locked into small talk. "How's work?" "So, do you like school?" "Where are you applying to college?" "Any progress on finding a new job?" Ugh. Grown-ups and teenagers alike can shift the attention away from a dull or sensitive topic with a plan for engaging the speaker elsewhere. Plant some memories with your teens that they can ask about (tell me about the time Aunt Aliza poisoned you with the mushrooms, Uncle Jeff?) or suggest other basics—movies, books, binge-worthy television—for finding common ground.

Not my circus. Not my monkeys. When all else fails, take a step back and look at these crazy people around you (and whisper to your teenager to do the same). You can't control them. You can't deny them. Sometimes, you can't even like them. All you can do is love them, and let them perform their various circus acts while you sit quietly in the peanut gallery, doing your best to stay out of it. If the holidays are good for nothing else, they are good for giving us all a few good stories to tell when the New Year rolls around.
Congratulations to Mia B. '21 for leading a team of Grauer students, families, and faculty to participate in the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) One Walk on Saturday, November 10. Together, The Grauer School team raised over $2,500 for T1D research.
Twelve Grauer students and 3 teachers traveled to Toronto, Canada to attend the 2018 Parliament of the World's Religions, the oldest, largest, and most inclusive global interfaith event, from November 1-7. The event theme was The Promise of Inclusion, the Power of Love: Pursuing Global Understanding, Reconciliation, and Change.
9th grade students in Health Class went head-to-head with one another as they competed in the 7th Annual Grauer School Cook-Off! Preparing three different dishes and applying a unit's worth of knowledge to their food selection and preparation, the class presented their dishes to a panel of Grauer judges.
Congratulations to Grauer's Middle School Robotics team, the Grauer Gorillegos, for competing in an FLL (First Lego League) Robotics tournament on November 3. The team was incredibly excited to win the 2nd Place "Core Values" award!
Grauer's Visual and Performing Arts Department presented the first Middle School Café Night event of the year on November 1. The evening included musical performances and drama monologues presented by the Music and Theatre departments, and a display of art projects presented by the Visual Arts department.
Grauer's High School ASB presented Spirit Week during the week of October 29 through November 2. Congratulations to the Senior class for winning the Spirit Week competition, and thanks to all of the other grades and the faculty for showing their spirit all week long for this fun competition!
On Saturday, November 3, The Grauer School Surf Team attended the first Scholastic Surf Series contest of the year in Ocean Beach.
Congratulations to Jackie J. '23 for winning The Grauer School's National Geography Bee on Friday, November 1! Jackie will be moving on to the California State Geography Bee round. Congratulations as well to Mac R. '24 for being the second place runner-up.
Grauer 9th graders went on a field trip to see Julius Caesar at The Old Globe Theater in Balboa Park. The week before, an actor from The Old Globe came to Grauer's campus to lead the students in a workshop, creating tableaux representing key scenes from the play.
Students in 9th Grade Biology class gave Evolution Research presentations this week about the evolution of an organism or trait they had chosen to research. Students researched theories about how the organism evolved and the support for each theory.
