Independent School Redefined: A Mission of Balance

We redefine what a private school looks and feels like. As one of San Diego’s best college prep schools, The Grauer School’s purpose is unique but simple – to teach and encourage students to become resourceful, intellectually curious and intrinsically motivated, perseverant, self-advocating, and accountable in a compassionate, college preparatory environment.

Teach and Encourage

Our learning model fosters nurturing relationships between teachers and students. With a best-in-the-area student to teacher ratio of 7:1, teachers know each student’s personality, learning style, strengths, weaknesses and academic objectives.

Students get the support and connection they need, and their input is crucial in setting and achieving academic goals that allow them to distinguish themselves in a way that commands the attention of college admissions officers. Lifetime bonds form.

Grauer Core Values

The Grauer School advocates six Core Values which we believe are integral to developing well-rounded students who are purposeful, confident global citizens. Each of these core values is of equal importance, and together they give a balance to everything that students accomplish during their time at Grauer. What’s more, they provide a compass for life.


One of the primary tenets of The Grauer School is to develop resourcefulness in our students. Inspirational real-world projects make the curriculum come alive. On the post-secondary path, students learn to view our community and our world as a primary resource which they use to generate knowledge, coming to their own conclusions while integrating texts with experiences makes learning authentic. Grauer’s unique Expeditionary Learning and our Arts program are “across the curriculum” — community learning at its best.

Intellectual Curiosity

Intrinsic motivation and a love of learning are modeled and valued by our faculty. Curiosity is the spark that ignites intellectual pursuit and creates passionate, entrepreneurial learners for life. Expeditions, guest speakers, and student-created programs of all kinds complement required subject matter to stimulate young minds.


Not every student is equally passionate in every field, but everyone is encouraged to maximize their talents—and those talents are embraced. Resourcefulness and determination are valued in every young learner and our Mastery Learning program enables each student to grasp information before moving on to other topics.


To become compassionate community members, The Grauer School’s students and teachers participate in community service projects together throughout the year. Compassion is developed in the following ways:

  • Through ecological and humanitarian service by all teachers and students.
  • Through mutual teacher and student performance evaluations daily.
  • In small classes where teacher/student relationships are fundamental.
  • Through teaching methodologies where students can find individual meaning.
  • By fostering and honoring personal motivation in each student.
  • By creating an exciting, caring and connected campus.


Students are encouraged (“en-Couraged”) to speak up for themselves and for what they believe in. Our student proposal process teaches entrepreneurship and effective communication. The confidence to engage authorities and issues appropriately is a skill that opens doors and creates opportunities. (You will experience this the moment you meet a Grauer School student.)


Our programs offer flexibility and a wealth of opportunities. However, this freedom occurs in the context of accountability to oneself and to others. They follow through until the job’s really done. In learning to take ownership of their actions, students earn self-respect and independence—and become sought after team members.


Intrinsically Motivated Students

In a world that often seems to put “standards” before personal development, and to put institutional needs above human needs, Grauer keeps the focus on the individual student. Our students achieve and are valued because they are developing personal passions. After a highly personal search process done with Grauer's college counseling team, all of our students who desire to do so move on to colleges of choice. However, Grauer does not want its students to achieve so as to get high GPAs, high scores, or high college ranks. Grauer students seek larger purposes, and they are consistently encouraged to find what the world needs of them.
