The Grauer School offers independent studies for students who have vocations or professions that require flexibility in their educational scheduling. These classes are available on a course-by-course basis for students at The Grauer School and students in the greater San Diego community on our campus in Encinitas.
Grauer Independent Studies students have distinguished themselves in many fields, including but not limited to tennis, figure skating, surfing, team sports, equestrian skills, acting, music, and even rodeo.
For students attending other schools, we recommend always discussing with school administrators the maximum number of units a student can earn from an outside institution like The Grauer School.
Virtually all classes can be offered in a one-on-one independent studies format. These courses require students to exercise accountability and self-advocacy, as classes meet only two or three times per week. Each independent studies course includes 34 hours of one-on-one instruction per semester (40 hours for lab courses, and 38 hours for honors courses).
Independent study courses cost $2600 per semester. A fee of $200 will be added to each semester of any class being taken for honors.
In compliance with NCAA regulations, all Independent Studies courses are marked PAC on transcripts to designate that these classes were taken at either a condensed or expanded pace set by the student, or different than a traditional class.
Grauer School units are accredited by the WASC. Units are only guaranteed if the student has permission in advance from his/her school guidance office to take the course. Acquiring permission is not the responsibility of The Grauer School or any of its representatives. Be mindful when registering as each school or district has its own transfer credit policy, and there may be a cap on transferable units. Transcripts will be mailed to your school one week after completion of course(s). Extra copies of transcripts cost $20 each.
A $75 non-refundable registration fee is required to reserve your space for students new to The Grauer School. Final tuition is due prior to the first day of class. Tuition is non-refundable after classes begin. Checks should be payable to The Grauer School, and mailed with the application to:
